When I asked Kristi at The Nayden Art Department (Check out the Instagram) if she would do something for the sixth anniversary I was thinking like, a cute birthday card, or a character design for someone we’d met in the past year (she did some of that too)
INSTEAD, she suggested drawing specific scenes. I’ve been sharing them over on my Instagram over the past two weeks and I’m still kind of in awe of everything she did. So, shall we?
Annalise’s Vision Of Brayton And Marina

The Princess’s DreamI swallow, gripping the sword, my father’s sword, at my belt and walk into the large throne room. Seated at the end is him. Brayton, dark hair, pale skin and a satisfied smirk on his face.
It usually ends when I see him. But this time is different. He isn’t alone, sitting beside him is a girl. She looks a lot like me actually, the same light brown skin and curly brown hair. She is smiling adoringly at him, dressed in white.
“Darling,” he addresses her, “welcome our cousin properly.” She turns at looks at me, smiles softly and lifts her hands, I feel myself choke.
“Happy Birthday, Cousin,” she says softly. I woke up with a start. I’d never dreamed that before. I’d never seen my cousin Marina before, beside him. My hand caught on my throat as I caught my breath. I wasn’t choking, I was safe, in my bedroom in Pantona.
Marina Defeats A Shadow Army With Battle Magic

Annalise, Aaron, Tristan and Athena standing back to back, slashing, stabbing, and shooting at the shadows. I inhaled deeply, and ran towards them. I had to help, I had to. Before I could get to them, two black guards were standing in front of me.
“I sense this one,” one of them hissed, “it’s the one we’ve orders for.” The other nodded, but as he went to grab me, something happened, I couldn’t explain it, but suddenly white light came forward and the guards were gone.
And not just the two that grabbed me, all of them. I looked around and the glen was clear. And then I swooned.
The Long Ride
And then there was the light, blinding, and white and when it cleared, we were alone, the shadows were gone. I saw the light retreating towards Marina, and then she fell. I ran towards her.
“Tristan,” I heard Thomas shout, “get Davis.” I didn’t know what that meant. I assumed it was the commander. I didn’t have time for that. Tristan was frozen looking at Marina, limp and fallen.
The Shadows
I frowned, but of course in moments, it didn’t matter because a blinding shock of white light shook the earth and the shadows had dispersed. Lisette ran to the edge of the battlefield and I saw Lady Marina collapsed.

Aaron and Athena Get Drunk on Armis (It’s Vodka You Guys)

After the ball Aaron and I went back to my rooms and as I started to get undressed I glanced back as he settled in at the table, two small glasses in front of him.
“What are you doing?” I giggled, tying a robe around my waist.
“Remember when I wrote to you about William?” He asked. I raised my eyebrows and sat down opposite him.
“That he didn’t deflower Marina?” I asked. He laughed. “That you got drunk?”
“Yes,” he said, “with this,” he plopped a bottle in front of us and then poured two shots. It was clear, and as I picked up the glass, ice cold.
“How?” I asked. He grinned.
“Raymond enchanted the bottle,” he said, “when I mentioned I brought it back. He said that the Rastani would never drink it warm.” I laughed and we clinked the glasses and downed the spirit. It didn’t burn like whiskey, but I could feel it going right to my head.
“Oh!” I said. Aaron nodded excitedly. “Oh that is wonderful.” He smiled. “It’s Rastani?”
“Made from potatoes, apparently,” he said, “good with juices too.” I smiled and leaned across the table and grabbed the bottle re-pouring my glass. Aaron laughed and poured his we downed the next shot. A few more and I felt floaty and giggly.
Goodbye
Carolina is in love, Tristan is distracted

“Caro,” he said softly, he’d never shortened my name that way before, it melted me. “I don’t want to lie to you, I’m not sure if I,” he exhaled. “I want to love you.”
“I know that,” I whispered softly. He nodded. “I’m glad that you can,” I looked at him, “thank you for telling me the truth.” He smiled and left. I sighed and flopped back into the covers. I’d been content, happy to be wanted and not even thinking beyond that. But somehow, him stating outright, so plainly that he didn’t love me. It felt like I’d been punched in the stomach.
Consummation
Marina defends Lefty from Brayton

“Well this is cozy,” A drawl came from the terrace door. We both sat up, and I gasped, “hello, Marina,” Brayton was grinning. “Lieutenant Lestoff, I haven’t had the pleasure.” Damian lept out of bed and went right for his throat but was quickly tossed aside by power. “How tedious.”
I felt frozen, I couldn’t move.
“How?” I exhaled. He sat down at the foot of the bed and smiled at me.
“We can discuss that later,” he said. Damian stood up again. “Oh, he’s resilient.” I swallowed. He flicked a hand and a large black funnel restrained him.
“Stop,” I cried out and shoved a hand at him, a blast of light coming out and shattering his magic. He looked stunned as I ran to Damian. He was gasping for breath. “Run,” I whispered to him, “try to get to the palace, tell Annalise.” He nodded, and did make it out the door while I held a wall of light up.
“Well, that is impressive,” Brayton smirked at me. I swallowed and steeled myself.
Nobody
Evan and Raymond are shy around each other

Of course Evan’s desire to be near Annalise flipped the day after her coronation. When Prince Eric and his entourage came and he saw him for the first time.
Lord Raymond Quents made Evan’s knees weak. He made him want to compose sonnets and build monuments in his honor. He wanted to hold him close and kiss him and build sandcastles and dance in the rain. It was embarassing how he started thinking whenever the Phanian boy walked in the room.
Interlude: Sparks Fly
Calla and Athena play Hide and Seek

“Ah, Athena there you are,” Martin said walking in, I looked at him. “What are you doing?”
“Well, I was hoping that a certain Viscountess would be interested in going to Dugarry House with me to see her Uncle,” I exhaled. “But it seems she’s disappeared.”
“Oh no,” Martin said with a grin, playing along, “maybe it was shadows?”
“It’s possible,” I sighed, “although I’m sure she would fight them far too fiercely.”
“Hmm,” Martin winked at me and I shook my head in a silent laugh. “Well, I will simply have to tell Grandmama that no one can eat the sticky buns that Cook made, since Calla has been captured while fighting shadows.”
“Nooo!” Calla came running out from behind a curtain, her strawberry curls, somewhere between my blonde and Aaron’s red, flying behind her. “Grandpapa, I did not get captured by shadows, I can eat them.” I laughed and scooped her up.
“I am so relieved,” I kissed her. She giggled. “Now, do you want to go see Uncle Tristan?” She nodded emphatically. “We’ll bring the sweets to him, I think, he’ll like that.”

Mercy and Elodie cuddle Althea

They’re here, they’re here!” Althea Graves-Willis exclaimed running into my office, followed solidly by her mothers. Mercy smirked at me, while Elodie scooped up their little girl, actually an orphan they’d adopted from Brightcoast. Althea was nearly five now, and positively doted on, not just by her parents but by most of court.
“Althea,” Mercy cautioned, “what did we say? If you could behave you could announce to Her Majesty.”
“I’m sorry Mother,” Althea sighed and wiggled out of Elodie’s arms and curtsied deeply. “Your Majesty, The Count and Countess of Pantona and their family have arrived in the city, if it would please you to greet them when they arrive at the palace.”
“Thank you, Lady Althea,” I bent down and kissed her forehead, “it does please me. As do you.” She laughed and ran off down the hallway.
An Injection of Chaos
Nika and Marina break up

“He was asking me for advice.”
“And you needed to be in his arms to provide it?” She snapped. I frowned at her.
“Nothing happened, nor will it,” I said and reached for her hands, but she pulled them away.
“I don’t ask much of you,” she muttered, “but I won’t be made a fool of. Aside from that, it’s cruel, to Carolina, to Annalise, to each other.”
“We were talking,” I said. She rolled her eyes. “You’re being unfair.”
“It’s always just talking,” she shouted. I swallowed, “Or just a dance, or too long a glance at dinner, or just a touch,” she exhaled. “There’s no just about it, and I’m sick of pretending it doesn’t happen.”
“I don’t want Tristan.” She laughed. “I don’t, it’s the past, I can’t erase it, but it isn’t,” I inhaled, “I don’t, not anymore.”
“Now you’re just lying, my love,” she said. I swallowed. “Of course you want him,” I stared her down, her amber eyes dancing with fire. “Don’t pretend one hurried night quenched a lifetime of flames.” She turned around and left. I swallowed and sat down.

Athena duels with Harran

“Are you ready, Countess?” Harran grinned at me.
“Of course, Chieftain,” I smirked and struck first. “To disarm?”
“As you like it,” his block was quick and strong and he shoved me back. “You can do better than that.”
“I’m trying not to bruise your pretty face before your wedding,” I grinned. He laughed. I swerved out and landed a hit against his chest. He retaliated with two against my arm.
The fight was perfect, and I was glad that I’d spent the trip working with Tristan. Before that training I would not have been able to keep up.
“Do you think your son sees your shame?” He teased, as I fumbled my spear and recovered. John stirred in my belly.
“I know your bride sees yours,” I countered. I heard Brea laugh from the side.
“She does indeed,” she called out and winked at me when I met her eyes. “No true shame to lose to The Champion, my love.”
“Who’s losing?” Harran grinned back. I struck hard against his staff, and knocked it free, and knocked him on his back.
“Yield?” I said. He sighed.
“Yield,” he shrugged. The crowd cheered and I laughed helping him up. “It’s brutal when you do that.” I laughed.
“You shouldn’t have invoked my son,” I grinned, “he got his blood up too.” Harran laughed.
“Fierce like your mama,” he pressed his hands against my belly. “Eh, Little One?”
Little Witch
Annalise seethed at Brea and Harran’s wedding

I swallowed sitting beside Harran’s brothers as he and Brea exchanged their vows. He looked unbelievably happy. The blue and green gown I’d had made and the veil wrapped around my head felt itchy and like my body was rejecting it. Rian looked at me and smiled.
Harran had told me once that when he’d come to me Rian had attempted to court Brea. He seemed to be the only person besides me who wasn’t over the moon. Did he love her? Had they been together at all? Had she tried to love him and failed the way I had Harran?
Wedding
Prior comforts Annalise after a Dream

I rolled my eyes and then woke up to Prior shushing me and stroking my hair while I thrashed and screamed.
“Annalise,” Prior whispered, “it’s alright love, it’s alright.” I realized he’d never seen me in a full Dream before and I started crying, clinging to him. “I’m here, sweetheart, it’s alright. Can you tell me what you saw?”
“No,” I said, “not yet, please just hold me,” he nodded and held me closer. I was shaking, my heart racing. I realized this was the first time I’d had this kind of Dream reaction with Prior in my bed. He was taking it well.
“I’m here, love,” he whispered and kissed my hair. “I’m here.” I looked up at him.
“I’m scared,” I mumbled.
“I’ll keep you safe,” he whispered. “Always.” Something deep in me, calmed. I believed him, all of me did.

Calla learns magic

Watching Calla learn with Nika and Brea has been amazing. Seeing her take to their kind of magic is wildly interesting.
I’m still not sure about it. I’m trying to picture my daughter in black, and veiled. I’m not sure I can, but I love watching her face light up as she creates small flames, or sits with her hands to the sand and feels it’s energy run through her.
I’m grateful she doesn’t have to be afraid, that she has this but doesn’t have to bear our burdens, Annalise, Marina and mine, the dreams and confusion.
“Mama, look!” Calla called over to me holding a cactus blossom in her hand. I stood up and walked over to her. “Lady Nika showed me how to make it open.”
“Really?” I said. Nika smiled indulgently at me.
“Can you make it close Little One?” Nika said gently. Calla looked at the blossom and scrunched her face very hard, which made the petals close up. Calla gasped excitedly. “Well done, Calla.”

Carolina and Lefty Fake Date

“Have you ever hunted much?” Lefty asked me as the sleigh we were in zoomed out of the city through the woods. I looked at him.
“A little,” I shrugged. “We ride after foxes and rabbits in Pantona. I went on a boar hunt in the valley in Dovetail once.” He nodded. “Will it be awful,” he nestled his face into my hair. “Lefty,” I cautioned him.
“Hush, love, you’ll blow your cover,” he teased. I rolled my eyes. It was a good cover. Being embroiled in an apparent but unconfirmed scandal made people’s tongues wag freely, assuming I’d want to have gossip to keep my own under people’s hats. “No, it’s all a great deal of fun. Raymond hates it.” I laughed.
